W. Collins Percussion Target Rifle, Crescent City, California

William Collins of Crescent City, Del Norte County, California, fine percussion target rifle in .45 caliber. The rifle has a heavy octagonal barrel back action lock, double-set triggers, and iron mounts, including a patch box. There is a hole in the tang for a peep sight, and the forend cap is pewter. The top of the barrel is stamped W. Collins. The stock has a carved cheek rest, and finely checkered wrist. The gun has iron buckhorn sights. There is a small false muzzle. William Collins was born in Indiana in 1821, but by 1860 was working as a gunsmith in Crescent City, California. 49 1/2 inches long overall with a 33 inch barrel. Condition:

Good plus condition. The stock has a number of minor dents and scratches, and the fit at the top of the lock plate is not good. There are two small sections of replaced wood by the forend cap. There is a filled-in spot for a sight on the top of the barrel. The metal has patches of minor rust and pitting. The bore is good with excellent rifling.
