Capitalizing on the gold discovery, he included a chapter on the mineral region drawn from official reports and his knowledge of the area's geology and his own opinion of gold specimens sent east. The preface was dated February 1, 1849. The map of the Sacramento Valley was an important source of information for gold seekers. Interestingly, the map titled “Map of Upper California” also included what would become Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $45.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
