Buck Jones was one of the greatest of the early movie cowboys, making over 160 films, both silent and talking, as well as doing radio shows and being the hero of a series of books. John Wayne counted Jones as his personal hero. He was known for his clean living, and exceptional cowboy skills, having worked as a real cowboy prior to being hired by the famous "101 Ranch." Buck Jones served two volunteer tours in the US Army, including being wounded in combat in the Philippines. He died at age 50 as a result of injuries received during the Cocoanut Grove Fire in Boston in 1942, having returned into the club to rescue other victims. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Frederick L. Esola was U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of California from 1924 to 1933. He was an exceptionally rigorous enforcer of the law, and was known for his enforcement of Prohibition laws, as well as being a no-nonsense lawman. He was a controversial figure, having previously been dismissed as San Francisco Police Chief.
