D.W. Laird presentation California gold badge with California bear surmounting the shield. Inscribed on back: "J.W. Maher 83 & 86" "A.F. Klose -85" /"A.F. Klose -84"/ "won by M.N Laufenberg 84 & 86 Dec 14, 79". Maker marked: "DWL. SF." Lower edge to the left of the pin clutch. D.W. Laird was a jeweler as well as maker of police badges in 19th century San Francisco having addresses at 618 Montgomery St., and in 1881 at 27 Post Street, and 1718 Broderick Street in San Francisco. Total gross weight: 23 grams. Joseph W. Maher was a locksmith with a business at 163 New Montgomery Street, and Quarter-Master Sergeant of the 1st California National Guard Regiment who died during the Spanish-American War, and is buried at the Presidio of San Francisco. Adolph.F Klose was a shipping clerk for M. Eherrman & Co., and lived at 703 Post Street. He was a Civil War Veteran and Major of the City Independent Guard, which formed a Company of the 1st California. Michael N. Laufenberg was Lieutenant in the 1st California, and a salesman for the Baker & Hamilton Company, and lived oat 711 California Street in San Francisco.
